Kidde Recalls Popular Fire Extinguishers

A division of United Technologies based in Farmington, Conn., Kidde has recalled plastic-handle and plastic-push-button fire extinguishers, which for years have been popular on powerboats. The United Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a recall notice for the devices yesterday.

According to the notice, the manufacturer’s recall involves 134 devices manufactured from January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2015. One fatality related to a Kidde extinguisher has been reported.

“The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency,” the notice stated. “In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”
