Kuttawa Cannonball Run Opens Registration Early For A Cause

Since last weekend, Kentucky has been in the news for the most tragic reasons as tornados slammed the state late Friday evening and early Saturday morning and claimed almost 80 lives. That got Kuttawa Cannonball Run organizers Jeff Hoefling, Terry Martin and Stephan Miles thinking about what they could do to help immediately—the devastation from the severe weather can be found within a half mile of the tiny town of Kuttawa—and to that end they opened registration this evening for the June 3-4 happening.

“All of the local marinas in the area are intact, but the surrounding areas were leveled,” said Hoefling, who actually lives in Indiana. “Last year, we were able to raise more than $50,000 for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department Kids Camp and Search and Rescue Department. That is a considerable amount of money, so we figured what better way to help out the storm victims than get started now and begin gathering donations to the community immediately, when they need it most.’”

“The magnitude of this storm system was unlike anything our state has ever seen and the thought of people not only losing their belongings, their homes and most importantly their loved ones is heartbreaking,” said Miles. “That it came during the Christmas season is just unfathomable.

In addition to the event T-shirts that will available during this Kuttawa Cannonball Run, the organizers are selling special “Kentucky Strong” T-shirts on the website. All proceeds will go the victims of the recent storms, many of whom have lost their homes and every possession they once owned.

In 2021, the Kuttawa Cannonball Run attracted 180 registered boats, which made it one of the year’s best-attended go-fast boating events.

“The opportunity to touch our communities with our small organization is what drives us,” said Miles. “But being able to help the victims of this tragedy is without question our organization’s biggest achievement to date. I couldn’t be more proud of Jeff, Terry, our countless volunteers and all of our Kuttawa Poker Run participants for making this event what it was always intended to be—a vessel of blessings for our community.”
