LEOPA Thunderfest Poker Run Filling Up

The main event for the Lake Erie Offshore Performance Association, the July 31 Thunderfest Poker Run based out of Ohio’s popular Put-in-Bay has filled 50 of its available 75 slots. That puts the annual happening on track to sell out and continue this year’s streak of sold-out and record-setting turnouts for go-fast boating events.

The five-stop run itself is just part of the event’s overall appeal, according to returning participant Todd Fountain of Michigan.

“Put-In-Bay is like a mini Key West—a lot of bars, good food and a lot of fun,” said Fountain, who plans to use his Cigarette Racing 41 GTR center console as well as Tom Cat, his 46-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran, during the weekend on Lake Erie’s South Bass Island.

Of the dozen events Southern California’s Devin Wozencraft will tackle this year, the LEOPA Thunderfest Poker Run is at or near the top of his list for multiple reasons.

“With many great places to eat, nice marinas, bars, beer gardens, wineries, beaches and caverns to explore, there is no shortage of things to do on South Bass Island,” said Wozencraft of the high-performance powerboat insurance company that bears his name. “Unlike other boating events that get crippled by bad weather for boating, there is plenty to do at Put-in Bay.

“Plus, the poker run offers more than 100 miles of boating to with multiple cool destinations, including the lunch stop at Lyman Marina,” he added

The event’s $650 registration fee includes the boat’s owner and one passenger—plus dockage. The fee for additional passengers is $150 per person. Would-be participants can register by clicking here.
