New Fountain 34 Sport Console To Get The SMD Treatment

Introduced a couple of years ago, Fountain Powerboats’ Sport Console interior-and-exterior, color-matched graphics package has proven popular with buyers of high-performance center consoles from the Washington, N.C., builder. Jeff Harris, the company’s chief operating officer, estimates that approximately one-third of the center consoles currently leaving the factory are dressed in Sport Console attire.

Fountain typically handles its paintwork in house, but for a new 34 Sport Console eventually headed to Doug and Anne Duell of Evansville, Ind., there’s a wrinkle. The 34-footer, which will be powered by triple Mercury Marine Verado 300 outboard engines, will be painted by Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky.

Bill Day of Day’s Boat Sales, a Fountain dealer in Frankfort, Ky., originally ordered the boat without a buyer for it. Having worked with Miles before, he tasked him to paint the then-unclaimed 34-footer.

Miles had become acquainted with Doug Duell, an automobile dealer, through social media. When Duell informed him he was looking for a Fountain center console, Miles, who knew he’d soon be painting one without a set home, referred him to the thriving Kentucky-based dealer.

“Doug told me it was going to be a long time before he could get one,” Miles said. “I said, ‘You know, I have one coming to my shop. You should talk to Bill Day.’ So I gave him Bill’s number.”

Said Day, “Stephen Miles actually got us together.”

For Miles, the paintjob will be his second for a new Fountain center console. In 2020, he painted a Fountain 43NX center console powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines for friend his longtime friends and clients, Carl and Diana Doemel.

The new 34-footer will be delivered directly from the Fountain factory to Stephen Miles Design for paintwork. It should arrive at Day’s Boat Sales in August.

Day described the boat as loaded.

“It has a big audio system, lots of LED lighting, all the bells and whistles of the Sport Console package,” he said. “And for reliability and fuel economy, you can’t beat the Mercury Verado 300s.

“Our business has been off the chain, really, really good,” he added. “We just can’t keep these boats in stock. It’s been something.”
