Outboard-Powered Mystic No. 100 Debuting At Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout
It’s tough to say what is more perfect for John Cosker and the team at Mystic Powerboats, that the DeLand, Fla., company will showcase its 100th outboard engine-powered boat at the upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri, that the boat is an M4200 center console—the model that started Mystic’s own outboard revolution—or that it’s going to Ben Onken, a member of the well-known Midwest family that has long supported the brand.
Set to be showcased at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, this Mystic M4200 center console is the company’s 100th outboard-powered build—and the second 42-footer owned by Ben Onken.
Call it a three-way tie or—better still—a three-way win.
“That’s crazy—I didn’t even know that,” said Onken, when told that his 42-footer, which will be displayed at the Shootout On The Strip street party and exhibit sponsored by Waves and Wheels, is outboard-powered Mystic No. 100. “I’m glad to be part of a great family tradition with a top-notch company like Mystic.”
A second-time Mystic M4200 owner, Ben Onken is the nephew of Don Onken, who owns the 51-foot American Ethanol Mystic catamaran that has claimed the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Top Gun title for past six years with Cosker on the throttles. Cosker will return this month to defend the title and is hoping to reach 210 mph on the three-quarter-mile course.
But no matter what speed he and his longtime cockpit-mate Tony Battiato achieve in the 51-footer, the accomplishment of producing 100 outboard-powered boats, this first of which was the M4200 model that debuted at the 2015 Miami International Boat Show, will be on his mind during the Shootout.
“It’s just crazy,” he said. “The crazier thing is we have almost a third of that many on order right now.”
Though the M4200 has represented the bulk of outboard-powered Mystic sales, the M3800 also has been a strong seller. Less of a contributor but coming on strong since the company went with a carbon-fiber layup, the C4000 catamaran rounds out the company’s current offerings with outboard power.

Greg Weber, Mystic’s national sales manager, has been part of the team since the company released its first 42-footer. Like Cosker, he’s amazed at how far the company has come in just six years. And he’s delighted that the milestone center console is going to an Onken.
“This is Ben’s second Mystic with us, and Don has, of course, the 51-foot cat as well as a 44-footer,” Weber said. “The Onken family has been such a big part of the Mystic family—and Mystic’s success.”
