Powerboating For A Cure Poker Run Returns This Weekend

Coming back from a pandemic-forced pause in 2020 and 2021, the 12th annual Powerboating For A Cure Poker Run produced by the Mid-Atlantic Powerboat Association returns this weekend to Norfolk, Va. Registration is still open and the nonprofit event should attract 50 to 60 high-performance boats.

The weekend begins with a Friday fun run and evening celebration. With two courses offered to participants, the poker run is set for Saturday and starts and finishes at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel host venue at Waterside Marina.

“I am thrilled to see the run return,” said Mark Tuck, a longtime Virginia-based participant in the event who owns a Wright Performance 360 catamaran. “Although I am a bit biased, I have always thought that location of the docking in relationship to the lodging and amenities is somewhat unique. Being able to experience navigating the waterways past the world’s largest naval yard and historic seaports is always a thrill.

“But honestly, getting together with friends and celebrating the hobby we love—all for the benefit of a great charity—is the best part,” he added.

That charity has changed for the 2022 happening. Since its inception, the event benefitted Susan G. Komen For A Cure, a nonprofit breast cancer research, treatment and awareness organization. This year, funds raised through the Powerboating For A Cure Poker Run will benefit Edmarc Hospice for Children based in Hamptons Roads, Va.

Lynnhaven Marine is this year’s presenting sponsor. Sponsorship opportunities at various levels are still available.

The event venue is completely self-contained.
