2nd Amendment Gunning For Second World Title In Key West

With designs on moving up to the Superboat class next season, the Production 3-class 2nd Amendment team of owner Joe Vaughn, throttleman Neil Wobbe and driver Karl Steger has been quiet this year. But after “getting antsy sitting on the sidelines,” according to Wobbe, the team decided to compete in the Super Boat International National Championships last month in Clearwater, Fla., and came away with a win in their first and only race of the 2016 SBI season.

Now the 2nd Amendment folks are in Key West, Fla., and attempting to back up their 2015 world title with another by the end of this week in their 36-foot Spectre catamaran powered by twin 500-hp engines.

“Our owner wants to move up to the Superboat class so we’ve been shopping around,” said Wobbe. “Last year, we wanted to go out (of Production 3 class) on top with the Triple Crown (SBI Florida Championship, National Championship and World Championship) and we just missed with a broken propeller blade in Clearwater.

“This year we won the Clearwater race,” he continued. “Being away from it, the owner missed it and he said, ‘Let’s go to Key West. Let’s go defend our world championship.’”

Wobbe has been racing for approximately 20 years and has won six world titles. Steger joined him the 2nd Amendment cat’s cockpit two years ago. Last year’s world title included a special wrinkle for the team.

“My partner, Karl, got married down here last year,” said Wobbe. “And it also was his first world championship.”
