Shootout Update: Outerlimits Battle Shaping Up for V-Bottom Top Gun Title
An Outerlimits SV 43 canopied raceboat powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines currently is fighting with an Outerlimits SL 52 open-cockpit pleasure boat powered by Mercury Racing 1650 Race engines for the V-bottom Top Gun title today at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. Yesterday morning, the 52-footer driven and throttled by Mike Fiore, the owner and founder of Outerlimits in Bristol, R.I., reached a top speed of 149 mph on the liquid-mile course. Earlier today, Fiore throttled the 43-footer with the boat’s owner—and Fiore’s longtime racing partner—Joe Sgro on the wheel to 152 mph.
Fiore currently is in line for his second run in the 52-footer, which is owned by Dave Scotto and is the first V-bottom to be powered by Mercury Racing 1650s. When he returns from the run, he’ll hop in the 43-footer with Srgo for another run.
“We had a little bobble about halfway down the course in our first run,” said Sgro. “I think it has another two or three miles an hour in it, so when Mike gets back we’ll run it again.”
