Spectre 36 Cat Gets Dramatic Makeover From Waves And Wheels

Although Mississippi performance boater Rick Furr was hoping to be hanging out in Louisiana for the Tickfaw 200 Poker Run this week in his recently upgraded Spectre Powerboats 36 catamaran poker run edition, the former drag boat and car racer came to terms several weeks ago that he’d have to settle for sitting in the boat in his garage listening to the new stereo after the event was cancelled and shelter-in-place restrictions were put in place.

Fortunately the completely revamped cockpit interior and sound system has helped him deal with the fact that he’s not at his favorite boating event of the season. So for that reason, he’s grateful he took his boat, which is powered by twin 575-hp Mercury Racing engines, to Missouri earlier this year to have the accomplished team at Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach replace the dated interior of the all-white six-seat cockpit. In the process, the Waves and Wheels crew built matching dash panels, added courtesy lighting, puts in heads-up drive and tab indicators ahead of the driver, and installed a new audio system with Bluave Marine Audio components.

“The boat is phenomenal—we love how it turned out,” said Furr, who decided to have Waves and Wheels bid the job after reading several positives stories and reviews about the company and its owner Justin Wagner online. “The team at Waves and Wheels was so professional. It was well worth driving my boat 700 miles away to have those guys do it. They are very talented and receptive to ideas, and they completed their work when they said they would. I’ve never dealt with anybody as on point and accurate as those people.

“The interior looks way more custom now, and the fit and finish is excellent—it’s way it’s supposed to be really,” he continued. “And I’ll tell you what, the stereo is amazing. They were thinking about going even bigger with it and I told them I don’t really need all that so they kept it fairly simple.”

Fairly simple meant four pairs of Bluave M7.0CX speakers, four EM2.0TR tweeters and two hidden MSE10 subwoofers. Extremely efficient on power consumption, both amplifiers Waves and Wheels utilized—the B2800.4 and B21000.1 series amplifiers—produce more than 1,000 watts of smooth, clean output, according to Wagner.

Along with incorporating a Fusion head unit that is tied into the Garmin display that was installed in the center of the dash between the driver and copilot and can control the colors of the speaker and courtesy lighting, Waves and Wheels moved all of the accessory switches to the center console next to the throttles and shifters, and added a custom backlit panel with push-to-start ignition buttons.

Furr was impressed with the upholstery craftsmanship, which included a carpet kit, custom seat inserts, stitching and side panels, and Spectre logos stitched on the back of the front two seat headrests as well as the headrests of the four rear buckets, and didn’t hesitate to let Wagner and his team know it. Promptly after getting the boat home, Furr sent a very positive email to Wagner thanking them for bringing his boat “into the 2020 time zone.”

“To me, the interior design fits this boat really well,” Wagner said. “It’s nice and relatively simple. I like the colors Rick went with; they complement the paintjob. I think the cross between the synthetic suede and the vinyl came out great. After doing this for as long as we have now, we’ve dialed in the high-quality threads and materials we use.”

Far exceeding his expectations, Furr credited Waves and Wheels for taking his vision for the boat to the next level. He also added that when he gets his next boat—yes the Spectre is for sale (it’s currently listed with Paramount Marine) because Furr is in search of a 36-foot Nor-Tech cat—he’s going to have Waves and Wheels update it.

Of course Waves and Wheels would love to work on any boat Furr brings its way. No surprise though as Wagner and the guys at the shop have never met a powerboat project they didn’t like. He said that his team is staying busy at both The Boardwalk at Waves and Wheels and Graphix 1 Paint, the sister company painting facility he co-owns with Andy Imhof of Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center.
