Team Scism Gearing Up For Lake Of the Ozarks Shootout In Canopied MTI 390X

After taking a break from the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in 2020, MTI’s Randy and Taylor Scism will return to competition this weekend in the Central Missouri event with their canopied MTI 390X raceboat powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines. This year’s top-speed contest will be the third on their home-water in four years for the father-and-daughter duo.

In 2018, the Scisms (right) made a couple of 114-mph passes on the three-quarter-mile course in a 340X catamaran powered by Mercury Racing 400R outboards. They returned the following year to deliver an impressive 123-mph blast in another 34-footer, this one with 450R outboards on the transom.

“I’m not sure how fast we’ll be able to run this weekend but I’m looking forward to it,” said Taylor Scism. “We’re testing tomorrow morning.”

John Tomlinson, who is throttling the 39-footer in the new Factory 450R Stock catamaran class with Taylor Scism on the wheel this season, said he expects her and her well-known father—who’ll also handle throttling duties—to reach a top speed of around “115 mph.”

The upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout actually is the third top-speed event this year for the father-and-daughter pairing. In April, they laid down a superb 160.1-mph run with her father in a 52-foot MTI catamaran powered by dual-calibration Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines at the Desert Storm Poker Run Shootout in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Last month at the Tiki Lee’s Shootout On The River hosted by Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar in Sparrows Point, Md., the Scisms ran a 390X cat with twin 450R outboards to 118 mph. They had hoped to be able to share the cockpit of the raceboat at the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in late June, but the final race of the day, which included Factory 450R Stock and Supercat classes, as well as Class 1, at the Southwest Florida venue was cancelled.

“We just try to have fun with it,” said Taylor Scism. “We keep things pretty serious in testing and getting everything ready, but once it’s go-time we try to go out there and do our best and have some fun.”

After the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, the raceboat will be hauled to the Race World Offshore-produced Clearwater Hooters Offshore Nationals Sept. 24-26 in Clearwater, Fla.
