Welcome Back, Billy Mauff

Practicing later today, the WHM Motorsports team will be gunning for another Supercat-class title this week in Key West, Fla., during the American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships produced by Race World Offshore. But as previously reported on speedonthewater.com, a serious illness this fall has forced team owner/driver Billy Mauff out of the cockpit of his 40-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran this week. Also reported earlier, veteran offshore racer Brit Lilly will be taking his seat next to longtime WHM throttleman Jay Muller.

As promised, Mauff is in Key West this week to cheer on his team. Even if his doctors had advised against it, staying in New York was out of the question for the hard-driving racer.

Asked how he’s doing with being in Key West this week but out of the raceboat, Mauff grumbled—and chuckled.

“Not good,” he said. “It’s the first time in 40 years that I’m not in a boat.”

Fans of the WHM Motorsports team would expect nothing less from its leader. Nor would the team’s fellow Supercat-class competitors. But even though Mauff won’t be behind the wheel this week, all are delighted to have him in Key West and on the mend.
