Wright In And Diorio Out Of LPC Raceboat For OPA Worlds

In offshore racing’s most recent version of musical chairs, throttleman Mike Wright will join driver Loren Peters in the cockpit of the 32-foot LPC team’s Doug Wright catamaran for the Offshore Powerboat Association Crystal Coast World Championships, October 22-25, in Morehead City, N.C. Last week, as reported on speedonthewater.com, business obligations knocked Wright out of this weekend’s Super Stock-class action, and Vinnie Diorio, the throttleman for the Supercat-class SV Racing team, stepped up to take his seat in Morehead City.

“I’ll be throttling the boat in the worlds this weekend,” said Wright. “My business acquisition got pushed a week so now I can make the race.”

Diorio gave up his seat without hesitation—despite that he’d already purchased a plane ticket to North Carolina. But the Wisconsin-based offshore racer is still heading there.

“Mike was like, ‘If you have a ticket already you just race,’” said Diorio, who runs a 39-foot Outerlimits V-bottom with driver Simon Prevost. “I said, ‘Dude, if you can go, you go race your boat. I’ll just go and have fun.’

“I am going to test with Loren on Thursday, just to experience the boat,” he added.

In September, Wright and Peters competed in their rebuilt raceboat at the OPA Crystal Coast Grand Prix—also in Morehead City—for the first time since it was damaged during a double-boat blow over at the 2019 Race World Offshore Key West Championships. They claimed second place in the second day of racing at this month’s Offshore At The Ozarks-Cat Edition event in Central Missouri.
