APBA Offshore Series Updates 2020 Schedule, Releases 2021 Dates

In a conference call today, promoters for the six venues on the 2020 American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1 groups discussed their current event schedule in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, they announced the following changes in a brief press release this afternoon.

• The first race of the season, the Lake Race on the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri has been postponed from its May 28-30 until “later in the season.” A new date has not been announced.

• The race promoters in Sarasota, Fla., and St. Clair, Mich., will announce the fates of their 2020 events sometime this week or early next week.

• The Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind., is cancelled but will return in 2021.

• The Thunder on Cocoa Beach (Fla.) contest is still scheduled for its August 27-30 dates. The final race in the APBA Series, Roar Offshore Fort Myers in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., is still set for October 8-10.

“All promoters agreed to protect the integrity of their race sites and sponsors, and with the continued concerns for safety, race fans and teams some very difficult decisions are having to be made for this year,” said Lucy Nicandri, the executive director of Suncoast Charities for Children and the lead organizer of the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix, in the release. “We all agreed on announcing next year’s schedule now.”

The 2021 APBA Offshore National Championship Series is as follows:

May 20-23—Cocoa Beach, Fla.
June 3-5—Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.
June 25-27—Sarasota, Fla.
July 22-25—St. Clair, Mich.
August 5-8—Michigan City, Ind.
October 7-9—Fort Myers Beach, Fla.
