Coming Soon: ‘The American’ Outerlimits From Graphix 1 Paint And Waves And Wheels

Patriots through and through, Steve and Marsha Brantley had a good idea what they wanted to do to transform their Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats 42 Legacy V-bottom when the time came to do just that. The boaters, who reside in Houston and spend their downtime between Tennessee’s Pickwick Lake and their farm in Meridian, Miss., also knew that they wanted the team at Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach, Mo., to handle the project.

Dubbed The American, this 42-foot Outerlimits project boat is expected to be on the water this summer.

So, earlier this year when they decided to change their 2006 Joker-themed 42-footer into The American, they enlisted Waves and Wheels and its sister company—Graphix 1 Paint, a collaborative paint and fiberglass shop in Osage Beach, Mo., owned by Andy Imhof of Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center and Justin Wagner of Waves and Wheels—to bring the patriotic theme to life inside and outside of the boat. And that’s exactly what’s happening now as the cockpit’s new seats and side panels are being wrapped up while the paintjob is being applied.

“This is our second go-round with Waves and Wheels working on our boat,” said Steve Brantley, who purchased the 42 Legacy, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing HP1075SCi engines and No. 6 drives, in 2016. “A few years ago, we had them update the interior and sound system. They also removed the engine hatch scoops, updated the sunpad with matching upholstery and installed a larger swim platform.

“When we bought the Outerlimits, which was our first big performance boat, we set out to turn it into more of a lake boat by making it more comfortable for the family to hang out on,” he continued, adding that he worked his way up from a Baja Marine Hammer 21 to a Baja 25 Outlaw and into a 35 Outlaw with twin Mercury Racing 525EFI engines before getting the Outerlimits. “We’re not really big poker runners or anything like that. We keep the boat in dry storage at Pickwick and we spend a majority of our time on the lake. We love it there—it’s such a beautiful place.”

Thanks to such a dramatic makeover that is currently in the works, Brantley believes the boat is going to be unrecognizable at the lake this summer.

“I have a feeling people are going to like the whole American flag design,” said Brantley, who also owns a Crownline Boats 30-foot runabout. “The boat is going to look incredible—I doubt anyone will know it’s the same boat. I had never worked with Andy with Maryland Offshore before, but he was great. He was super easy to deal with and very receptive to our ideas. I’ve seen a lot of American flag boats over the years and I think the design we ended up with is one of the coolest patriotic paintjobs I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

Wagner agreed with Brantley, and took it upon himself to come up with an interior design that would go well with the graphics.

“We’re super excited about The American,” Wagner said. “The entire project showcases what our team is capable of between the vision, the upholstery, the entertainment, the fabrication and the paintjob. Now that Graphix 1 Paint is running at full capacity with an expanded crew, the shop is a tremendous extension to what Waves and Wheels has been doing for so many years. We worked closely with Andy and Chris (Dilling) to come up with an interior design that complement the graphics without getting too crazy. I’m happy with how well everything is coming together.”

Brantley, who had Mark Boos of Precision Marine Performance Engines in Louisiana work on the 1,075-hp engines recently to make sure they were operating at peak condition, said he can’t wait to get his hands on his “new boat.”

“We considered getting a new boat, but once we started pricing them we figured we could put some work into the Outerlimits and bring it up to 2020 standards for significantly less money,” said Brantley, who is chief operating officer of A&R Logistics Inc. “Of course we went with Waves and Wheels because we’ve been impressed with the whole operation. Justin and his team’s customer service is top notch and their quality of work is outstanding. I can’t wait to go Lake of the Ozarks to see the boat once it’s finished.”

Wagner said he estimates the boat will be completed this summer.
