Cooper Standard, Patriot Vapor and Sun Print Take Second Race on Final Day in Key West

Cooper Standard/Twisted Metal team owner and throttleman Billy Glueck and his driver Brett Lee Furshman were on a mission today to finish first in the third Superboat Extreme class race of the week at the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla. While they did just that, the world title in the class likely will go to owner/throttleman Peter Meyer and John Stanch in Hooters/Instigator as they took first place in the first two races of the week and second today.

In the Cooper Standard Fountain, Billy Gleuck and Brett Lee Furshman took the victory on Sunday in the Superboat Extreme class.

Once again, it was a battle between Fountains—Meyer’s 40-footer and Glueck’s 37-footer.

“We wanted to win today, and that’s what we did,” Glueck said. “I think we got some good TV time for our sponsor.

“It was bumpy out there, especially between turns No. 1 and No. 2,” he added. “But we needed to finish first and have Hooters not finish the race.”

Friday’s Superboat Vee-class winner Mark Niemann of the Phantom 9 team predicted that Steve Miklos in Sun Print would do particularly well if the water got rough on Sunday. That predication came true as Miklos and his driver Steve Fehrmann passed Niemann and his throttleman, Tom Maddalena, early in the race.

As they did on Friday, Patriot Vapor owner/driver Chris Schoenbohm and throttleman Shaun Torrente led wire to wire in today’s Superboat Stock class in Schoenbohm’s 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran.

“That was a fun race today—the boat ran great and the balance was perfect,” Torrente said. “The wind shifted on us the last couple of laps so it got a little messy out there. Fortunately we had a great start. I think we had two or three boat lengths on everyone after the first turn and from there we held the lead.

“There was never any doubt in our minds, but on the last couple of laps we were just trying to conserve the gearcases and finish,” he continued. “I think we’re about nine points short of the world championship, but everything is unofficial so we’re not sure where we’ll finish overall quite yet.”
