Countdown To Miami 2022: FPC Prepping For Show Of Its Own
Just four days after the mist from the 2022 Miami International Boat Show clears next month, Florida Powerboat Club members will head to Key Largo, the longtime destination of the outfit’s annual Miami Boat Show Poker Run. Club president Stu Jones is expecting 80 to 100 boats to participate in the February 24-27 event, and as previously reported on speedonthewater.com he’s bringing back his outfit’s own weekend-long boat show at Gilbert’s Resort and Tiki Bar.

Jones launched the exhibit to fill a void created by the cancellation of the Miami event last year. The response to his fledgling event from high-performance boatbuilders such as Randy Scism of MTI, John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats and the entire team at Nor-Tech was predominantly positive—enough so that the likes of MTI, Mystic and Nor-Tech are returning this year.
The marine hardware exhibits behind Gilbert’s, however, failed to attract meaningful traffic in 2021. So they are gone from this year’s happening.
“It’s going to be focused more on the in-water displays,” said Jones. “I didn’t rent the parking lot like I did last year, but I rent all the docks and waterfront rooms at Gilbert’s. And I also secured a huge block of rooms at Playa Largo Resort.”
But before Jones can devote his complete attention to the Miami Boat Show Poker Run and Exhibit, he and his team have to get through the club’s Winter Poker Run To Islamorada, January 28-30.
“We got an eleventh-hour surge and we are at 30 boats now, which is exactly where we wanted to be,” he said, then chuckled. “But we have used up all our rooms. If we book anybody else we’ve got find another hotel—the story of our lives.”
The Florida Powerboat Club will not have an exhibit at the Miami International Boat Show, but the club will distribute its latest Powerboating In Paradise magazine throughout the event.
