Gallery: Highlights From The Second Texoma Throw Down

For a second-year event—particularly one that had to be rescheduled from May until August because of high water levels—the Texoma Throw Down, which is organized by the Texoma Powerboat Association, was a huge hit. Hosted at Marina Del Rey in Kingston, Okla., last weekend’s gathering on Lake Texoma attracted 97 boats and hundreds of participants, all of whom enjoyed the expansive lake, excellent weather, great food, which included Friday’s Burgers in Paradise/Fish Fry on North Island and Saturday’s barbecue dinner, and amazing camaraderie.

According to lead organizer Casey Moore, who said he couldn’t have pulled off the event without a tremendous amount of help from his wife, Tegan, the second annual fun run was an absolute blast.

“Everyone had so much fun this year—I’ve received nothing but positive feedback from the people who were there,” said Moore, who started the fun run last year and consulted with local officials, fellow organizers, sponsors and more before deciding to postpone the event at the last minute from mid May until early August. “We made some good strides and we gave out more than $8,000 cash and a ton of other cool prizes.”

Moore said the swag and prizes, which included apparel, tumblers, flags, laminated maps and more, were top notch. He also said the event raised almost $7,000 for Mission 22, a non-profit organization that provides treatment programs to veterans for Post-Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury and other issues they might be facing in hopes of combating the ever-rising veteran suicide rate.

He added that the first-place poker hand winners were Ron and Kerri Somerville, who participated in their Fountain Powerboats 35 Lightning. The Somervilles received close to $4,000 in cash as well as a custom watch from Poundfoolish Watches. Second place went to Kyle Lewis and Annie McDonald, who did the run in their 1997 Cigarette Racing Team Top Gun, while third place was awarded to Darren Hacker, who ran his Formula Boats 382 FAS³Tech V-bottom in the event.

“I think the event turned out better than any of us expected, by far,” said Casey Freeman, general manager of event sponsor Legend Marine Group in Carrollton, Texas. “It was unfortunate that it had to be postponed, but the weather absolutely sucked over the original weekend so it worked out in the end. We had a great time at the lake and we plan to be involved with the event again.”

Freeman said he and Legend Marine Group owner Greg Connell ran a 2019 Statement Marine 350 center console in the event and had a great time associating with the dozens of other performance boaters in attendance.

Although Moore plans to consult the participants, sponsors and local agencies on Lake Texoma, which borders Oklahoma and Texas, he said he’s likely to keep the event in August next year because the chances are greater for better weather. He hopes to announce the dates in the near future.
