Gallery Of The Week: Best Boats Of Miami In Action

For the fourth year in a row, speedonthewater.com set up a Friday morning photo shoot during the Miami International Boat Show. The hour-long shoot involves significant effort and coordination (not to mention expense) given the pre-show-opening time of the event on Virginia Key. Every high-performance powerboat company that opts in wants its boats to be back at the docks when visitors flood the show at 10 a.m.

Ace helicopter fly-boy Paul Barth, “the best helicopter you ever saw” (just ask him or even MTI owner Randy Scism, who thanked us in a text message he sent with an image from inside the company’s latest 48-foot cat) has to start the day to the north in Opa-locka, where his Hughes 500 aircraft is based. Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden has to have his gear ready and get over to his aerial ride from downtown Miami for lift-off 20 minutes before the shoot that starts around 9 a.m. and ends (hopefully) by 10 a.m.

And just for a little extra fun, this year—the second time we’ve used a helicopter for our annual Miami Boat Show shoot—we had 13 boats to photograph. That was almost double our boat-count in previous years.

But man, what a fleet.

In the slideshow below, you’ll find a Deep Impact 399 Sport center console, a Fountain Powerboats 34 Thunder Cat, a Jaguar Powerboats 43 catamaran, a Hustler Powerboats 39 Shotgun V-bottom, an MTI V-57 center console and the aforementioned 48-foot catamaran owned by longtime MTI owner John Caldwell, Mystic Powerboats latest M4200 and M3800 center consoles, an Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SL 44 V-bottom and SC 46 catamaran, a Skater Powerboats 438 catamaran powered by Mercury Racing 1550/1350 stern-drive engines and a 368 catamaran with twin Mercury Racing 450R outboards, and a Wright Performance 420 catamaran.

Not only was this the most boats we’ve packed into a one-hour shoot, we’ve never had a finer fleet. We think you’ll agree.
