Ilmor To Offer “Recreational” Version of 7.4 Engine

Before Ilmor Marine releases a 550-hp, non-catalyzed sportboat version of the LS-platform 7.4-litre engine it created for MasterCraft tow boats, it will offer a catalytic converter-equipped 522-hp variation for recreational boats, according to company president Paul Ray. Both engines will be available in early to mid 2012.

That will translate to three variations off the same basic LS engine platform in 2012.

“The second one will be for recreational boats that aren’t necessarily high-performance and will still maintain the catalytic converters,” said Ray. “We are not legally obligated to maintain the catalytic converters on any engine over 500 hp, but we will on that engine package.”
