Image Of The Week: Going, Going, (Almost) Gone

If you know anything about performance-boat enthusiast Ron Szolack—the man behind the annual Skaterfest event in Michigan—you know the guy doesn’t hang onto his boats long. And so it will come as no surprise that the Skater Powerboats 388 catamaran he ran with Myrick Coil of Performance Boat Center to the 173 mph during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout last month in Central Missouri is for sale.

The week after the Shootout, Coil and fellow Performance Boat Center team member Rusty Williams ran the 38-footer—the former Performance Boat Center Supercat-class raceboat—to 205 mph.

“I knew that boat was going to be fast,” said Szolack. “But 205 mph with 1,643-hp Sterling Performance engines? That’s incredible. The crew at Performance Boat Center did a great job.

“That boat runs like it’s on rails,” he added.

So if he loves it so much, why is he selling it? Szolack laughed at question.

“Would you expect anything less from me?” he said. “I just bought it for the Shootout.”

In addition to its recent top-speed performances, the boat comes with heady offshore racing credentials. With Coil and John Tomlinson sharing the cockpit, it earned Super Boat International World Championship titles in 2016 and 2017 and SBI National Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“It could be a Supercat raceboat again in two days,” said Brett Manire of Performance Boat Center. “All you need to do is swap engines and drives.”
