Image of the Week: One Bold Statement

When Chris Fertig and Tyson Garvin piloted a Statement Marine 37-foot center console to set a New York-to-Bermuda record of 21 hours and 39 minutes (Read the Boating magazine story) last weekend, they did more than establish a new benchmark for the 760-mile, open-ocean run. They captured the imagination of powerboat owners—go-fast and alike—around the country who dream of heading for the horizon toward some exotic destination and not stopping until they get there.

But as the Tim Sharkey image above clearly shows, the run was by no means a smooth-water affair for the twin 350-hp diesel engine-powered 37-footer. Between the boat’s fuel tanks and extra fuel cells, the team was carrying 680 gallons of fuel—and they still managed to catch some mighty big air on their way to the fabled getaway island in the Atlantic.

“With a 37-foot Statement topped off with 680 gallons of fuel, I would have never expected to get a ‘prop shot,’” said Sharkey.  “Imagine all of that weight crashing down onto the Atlantic Ocean for the next 760 miles It says a lot about Statement Marine’s hull, as well as the commitment of Chris and Tyson.”
