Image Of The Week: Performance Boat Center By A Nose—Or Two

A high-performance biplane “racing” a high-performance catamaran has become a Lake of the Ozarks Shootout tradition. This year, Performance Boat Center got into the act with the Osage Beach, Mo.-based dealership’s new MTI raceboat—currently third in the Supercat class of the six-race inaugural American Power Boat Association Offshore Championships Series—taking on the aircraft.

Having beaten a stunt plane at last weekend’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, the next stop for the Performance Boat Center MTI raceboat is Fort Myers Beach, Fla., October 12-14, for the APBA Offshore Championship Series season finale (click image to enlarge). The annual boat-versus-plane demonstration is a fun break in the aquatic top-speed competition and always a crowd-pleaser, especially for those folks in the spectator fleet, at the Central Missouri event. For the Performance Boat Center crew, it was a great way to cap a weekend of success that included a class-winning 173-mph run by Myrick Coil and Ron Szolack in the team’s former raceboat, a Skater Powerboats 388 catamaran, and a fun “drag race” down the three-quarter mile course in the team’s Super Stock-class 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran.

The slideshow above includes some of the other Performance Boat Center action throughout the weekend.

In that Sunday afternoon exhibition, Coil and driver Rusty Williams ran the Performance Boat Center/Auto Alert outboard-powered cat against CR Racing/Anchoring.com, a 32-foot Doug Wright owned by Missouri teammates Casey Boaz and Rob Unnerstall. Heading into the late-October season finale in Fort Myers Beach—the Roar OffshorePerformance Boat Center/Auto Alert has sizable 37-point lead in the class standings over CR Racing/Anchoring.com (Shadow Pirate is in third, 15 points behind Boaz and Unnerstall) despite not having won any of the previous five races.
