Key West Friday Race 3 Wrap-Up: CMS Teams Go One-Two
CMS team owner Bob Bull clearly has come to Key West, Fla., to take home a Superboat Unlimited-class world championship. And while he finished in second place a few moments ago with throttleman/Marine Technology Inc., company principal Randy Scism in his new 52-footer with twin Mercury Racing 1650 engines, his team still prevailed. That’s because ace throttleman John Tomlinson and driver Jeff Harris piloted Bull’s “older” CMS cat, a 48-foot MTI also equipped with Mercury Racing 1650 power, to victory in the class during the second day of Super Boat International Offshore World Championship competition.
The 48-foot CMS also took first place on Wednesday. An accident knocked the 52-footer out of the contest early.
“Racing conditions were flawless today—the course was short and really, really fast,” said Tomlinson. “You’d get around turn one and then you’d be right on turn two.
“Bob and Randy are pumped,” he added. “We’ve just got to do it one more time.”
Defending Unlimited-class champion Miss GEICO ran strong at the start, but appeared to develop mechanical problems and slowed dramatically. Still, the team finished third.
