Miami Boat Show Poker Run Approaching Capacity

Carrying momentum from its return to form in 2019 after several years of steady decline, the Florida Powerboat Club’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run, February 21-23, is selling out quickly. According to Stu Jones, the president of the Pompano Beach, Fla., club, the event can accommodate 52 boats and is already 80- to 90-percent full.

“We can handle 30 boats at the Marriott Autograph Collection Playa Largo Resort and 22 boats at the Hilton Curio Collection Bakers Cay Resort in Key Largo. “I think we have about 10 to 15 rooms left. Rooms definitely are a challenge in high season anywhere in the Keys—or anywhere in South Florida for that matter.”

The run takes its name from the annual South Florida exhibition at Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, which runs February 13-17 this year. The Florida Powerboat Club is a longtime exhibitor at the event and its poker-run the following weekend typically attracts a solid fleet of boats that were exhibited in the show.

Jones said that he will open a waiting list for the event when it sells out.

“That’s usually what happens,” he said. “But we can become very resourceful in finding rooms for anybody who still wants to go. It’s just a bummer for somebody who wants to be with the crowd and has to stay four miles down the road.”
