Miles Dressing Outerlimits SL 52 With ‘Different’ Paintjob

In the next few months, Stephen Miles and his team at Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., will be pointing their airbrushes at several high-performance sportboats from Outerlimits, the vaunted custom go-fast V-bottom catamaran builder in Bristol, R.I. With relatively new, 25-year-old foreman Chris Simon leading the charge, the Stephen Miles Design team currently is in the process of painting an SL 52 V-bottom.

Currently in the painting process, this SL 52 is one of four Outerlimits sportboats Stephen Miles Design will tackle in the new few months.

“It definitely is a different sort of paintjob—some people will love it, others won’t,” said Miles. “But we’re always trying to push ourselves to do something different, something we haven’t done before.

“Chris has been an amazing addition to our team,” he continued. “He’s an artist, so he understands the graphic process. He’s not designing for us, but he understand what we’re doing and he’s super talented. Having him here has taken a lot of weight off of me. He’s sees working 40 hours a week as a ‘part-time job.’”

Next in line for Stephen Miles Design’s six-person crew, which includes the company namesake’s 18-year-old son, Corey, is an SL 44, followed by an SL 41 OB—the second outboard-powered 41-footer from the builder—and an SV 43. With each job taking approximately 600 to 1,000 man-hours from start to finish, that means they’ll be busy for the next few months.

“Nobody preps a boat for paint like Outerlimits,” said Miles. “They are 99 percent ready to go when they get here, but it still takes a lot of time to execute the paintwork.”

Miles paused, then laughed.

“I have to give some props to my wife, Heather,” he said. “I’m anal as hell when I work—I’m a diva. She puts up with me.”
