New DCB Performance Boats M28R Heading To Eufaula Lake

Whether you call it Eufaula Lake or Lake Eufaula—and that tends to vary from one Oklahoma go-fast powerboat owner to the next—the almost 21-million-acre-foot reservoir is a popular aquatic playground for folks in the Sooner State. And now, thanks to Randy Waters of Oklahoma City, it will be home-water to a new DCB Performance Boats M28R open-bow catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines.

Though the new 28-footer is the owner’s third DCB catamaran—he previously owned a Mach 26 and an M31 Widebody powered by a Mercury Racing 1350 engine as well as an assortment of high-performance boats from the likes of Advantage Boats and Howard Custom Boats—it is his first custom creation from the El Cajon, Calif., boat with an open bow area.

“No doubt, closed-bow boats are sexy, but at my age I don’t want to be confined to a small cockpit and a few seats,” said the 61-year-old Oklahoma native. “I’ve outgrown being confined. I’ve also outgrown going 150 mph. Once you’ve gone fast enough times, you’re done with it.”

Waters, who owns a home on the shores of Eufaula Lake with his wife, Lori, took delivery of the boat yesterday in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte tested the cat on Lake Elsinore in Southern California the day prior to bringing it out to the popular Colorado River-fed waterway. Together, they ran the new open-bow beauty for most of the day at speeds ranging from 80 mph to 95 mph.

During his Lake Elsinore test session, Chiaramonte reportedly ran the boat to 102 mph, which is plenty fast for its new owner.

“I told Tony and Jeff Johnston that all I wanted was a boat that could run between 90 and 100 mph all day with an excellent stereo system, and that’s exactly what DCB delivered,” Waters said. “I couldn’t be more pleased.

“We went out on the lake yesterday running 85 to 95 mph, and it handled super-well in the chop,” he continued. “I was surprised at how busy the lake was—there was a lot more traffic than I expected. It was packed. We had to run all the way down toward Parker to get away from it.”

In keeping with his desire for great tunes on the water, Waters opted for DCB’s Stage III stereo option. The setup includes a Fusion head unit and a pair of hard-wired remote controls, three JL Audio amplifiers, a dozen JL Audio M6 midrange speakers with LEDs and two 13-inch JL Audio W3 subwoofers.

The half-capped boat is the second DCB M28R to be built with a full open bow—the first went to Paul Loska of Southern California last April. It was constructed using the Vacuum Infused Resin process, and the lamination scheduled included carbon fiber and foam coring. For the boat’s interior, Waters opted for a fifty-fifty blend of Alcantara and CHILL Cool Tech Marine vinyl.

Interior niceties also included a custom steering wheel from CP Performance—black on black with contrasting stitching—a custom carpet kit and DCB’s Interior Rigid LED lighting package with mood, courtesy and cupholder lights. Keeping things clean and simple at the helm station are a pair of Mercury VV703 touch-screen monitors.

Sometime today, Waters plans to pull out of Arizona and head for Oklahoma with the boat on its tandem-axle, two-tone trailer from Extreme Custom Trailers in Rialto, Calif.

“We used to travel to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, but I built a house on Eufaula and it’s my favorite lake,” Waters said.

Waters paused and laughed. “I’ve always been a little type-A,” he said. “So I’m putting an extra layer or two of tape on the cover for the ride home.”
