Outboard-Powered Nordic 28 SS Sport Catamaran Hits 110 MPH

Nordic Boats of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., continues to see strong performances from its offerings powered by twin stock Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines. Last month, for example, the company delivered a 26 open-bow deck boat to a first-time buyer, and the 26-footer reached 95 mph with the 400-hp engines turning 6,700 with 28-inch-pitch Bravo propellers on the spindles.

More impressive still is the recent performance of the company’s new 28 SS, a closed-deck six-seater powered by twin stock Verado 400R outboards. Owned by second-time Nordic buyer Jeff Vandermey—his first Nordic was a 26-foot deck boat—and set up for overall performance rather than top speed, the 28-footer reached 110 mph with engines turning 6,699 rpm. The boat was equipped with 32-inch-pitch Mercury five-blade propellers.

“At 100-plus mph, you can have a conversation with the person sitting next to you,” said Bob Maguire, Nordic’s sales manager. “And it has a lot left in it. As you know the last 28 SS we built hit 130 mph with stock Verado 400s.”

Vandermey will keep the 28-footer at a home he owns in Havasu Springs. As it happens, Southern California-based Paul Wallner, who owns the Verado 400R sport catamaran that reached 130 mph, also has a home in the popular Colorado riverfront neighborhood.

“We could have set it up with hydraulic jack plates and all that for stop speed, but Jeff is a little more laidback,” said Maguire. “But we set it up with Max Five propellers and told him what the top speed would be, and he’s more than happy with it.”
