Outerlimits Center Console Is Painter’s Dream Boat

In any given year, Stephen Miles spends more time staring at the decks and hullsides of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats V-bottoms and catamarans than even the most devoted fan of the Bristol, R.I.-based brand ever will. That’s because Miles, the founder of Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., has painted most of the company’s exquisite creations for the past five years.

But the talented airbrush artist never dreamed he’d own one. Now, thanks to Outerlimits customers Carl and Diana Doemel, he does. Miles painted a new SL 52 for the Doemels, who live in Wisconsin, and Outerlimits is in the process of finishing the build. The Doemels and Miles worked out a deal that included a deposit and now he has a unique outboard-powered center console. It is the only one Outerlimits ever built based on its original two-step 37 Stiletto hull. The company debuted the boat at the 2012 Miami International Boat Show.

“Carl and Diana are among the first customers that Mike and Dan sent me to talk to way back when I was painting my first two boats at the Outerlimits factory,” said Miles. “That was when SMD first started. And it was the start of a long and fun relationship with them. They’re such great people and they made this deal very easy for me.”

Dialed in by Brian Forehand of Marker 17 Marine after its unveiling, the boat has 200 operating hours on its triple Mercury Marine Verado 300 outboard engines and tops out at 80 mph.

“It’s the perfect boat for us,” said Miles. “It really is amazing.”

Miles will sell his Cobalt 343 sportboat—the only Cobalt in existence with a Stephen Miles Design paintjob—this spring. “I am taking care of a few minor odds and ends to make her tip top before I list her,” he said.

This fall he’ll start working on a fresh look for his new ride.

“To be honest, I don’t hate its current paintjob,” he said, then laughed. “But I can’t have a boat with somebody else’s graphics. So we’re going to give it a kick-ass Stephen Miles Design paintjob.”
