Portfolio: Tim Sharkey

Photographer Tim Sharkey is, through and through, a New Jersey boy. Before, during and after Super Storm Sandy a couple of years back, which laid waste to much of the New Jersey Shoreline, the local Brick Township shooter continually put himself in harm’s way to capture the coastal communities of his beloved Garden state coming apart, and then slowly coming back to together—work that continues today. No local photographer has dedicated more time and energy, without compensation, to chronicling the devastation of Super Storm Sandy and the coastal restoration still going on in its aftermath.

Inspired by renowned Powerboat magazine photographer Tom Newby—Newby actually captured Sharkey and his wife running their 28-foot Checkmate sportboat with twin Mercury 2.5L EFI outboard engines during an Atlantic City Poker in the early 2000s and Newby signed the image for his soon-to-be protégé. The self-taught photographer shot everything on the water from Jersey Speed Skiffs to offshore powerboats to surfers riding the Jersey Shore’s coveted curls. Along the way, he earned recognition, and his images found homes in Boating magazine, Powerboat magazine, Performance Boats magazine, Poker Runs America magazine, H2O magazine, Heavy Hitters magazine, Soundings magazine, Sportboat magazine and—most recently—Speed On The Water digital magazine. On the offshore racing side of the powerboat world, Sharkey has captured everything from regional Offshore Powerboat Association events in New Jersey to the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla. On the giving side, he donates his time and talent to photographing Shore Dreams for Kids, a day of boat rides, carnival fun and food for mentally and physically challenged adults and children.

Though Sharkey remains dedicated to capturing still images, in 2014 he expanded his capacity and ability to produce full-length video using primarily racer-supplied onboard video blended with long- and short-distance video.
