Sgro Memorial Poker Run Solid With Two Weeks To Go

More than 20 high-performance powerboats are registered for the second Joe Sgro Memorial Fun Run in September 13-15. Produced this year by Elite Poker Runs LLC, the New Jersey-based run celebrates the life of Sgro, the former Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats president/investor and offshore racer who died from injuries sustained during a poker run to Key West, Fla., in November 2017.

The event was established in 2018 by Joe Cibellis, a longtime friend of Sgro. Last year’s run attracted 44 boats and approximately 300 participants.

“With two weeks to go and more than 20 boats registered, I’m feeling pretty good about how the event is building so far,” said Anthony Scioli of Elite Poker Runs LLC. “We have lots of time left for people to sign up. I’ve also been told that a lot of people register on the day of the event, though we’re trying to get away from that as it makes it hard to plan.

“This year, the lunch stop is at Blu Point in New York,” he continued. “It’s the best lunch stop for an event I’ve ever had. The whole thing should be a really good time.”

As it was in 2018, the run will be based out of Liberty Landing. Photographer Tim Sharkey of Sharkey Images is returning to capture the event from start to finish. According to Cibellis, well-known Outerlimits customer Vinnie Diorio—an offshore racer running his first full season—and offshore racing veterans including Steve Curtis, Billy Mauff and Pete Meyer, all longtime Sgro friends, have committed to participate.

Based in Bristol, R.I., Outerlimits has signed on as a sponsor for this year’s happening.

“This year is all about the boating—a true poker run with a great lunch stop—and our Liberty Landing venue speaks for itself,” said Cibellis. “We’ll be celebrating Joe and his love for performance boating with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. With all that plus help from Tony at Elite Poker Runs, it’s going to be a great event.”
