Shootout Update: Recycler Gunning for 200 MPH Today

By the time you read this, Recycler, a 51-foot Mystic catamaran owned by Don Onken, should have a new blower on one of its four V-16 engines and be ready for its second run today at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri. The blower “blew up,” according to driver Myrick Coil who drove the cat with throttleman and Mystic Powerboats company owner John Cosker throttling, early in the run, which produced a top speed of 160 mph. That was considerably shy of the 188-mph mark the cat established during a run yesterday.

“We got a great start,” said Coil, as the Recycler crew worked in the engine compartment to replace the failed blower unit. “And then the boost from one of the blowers went from 18 pounds to zero.”

“We should be done pretty soon and ready to go again,” said Coil. “We’re shooting for 200 mph.”
