Shootout Update: Advanced Marine Celebrating 20 Years at the Shootout

Advanced Marine owner Steve Wallace had one goal at this year’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout—to run 120 mph in his 1994 28-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran for his 20th anniversary at the liquid-mile top-speed event on Missouri’s popular lake.

The speed, which he and throttleman Brandon Moore reached yesterday after two 119-mph passes along the course in front of Captain Ron’s, was the fastest Wallace has ever run at the Shootout, and man was he proud. Born and raised in Osage Beach, Mo., Wallace has seen the Shootout grow from a local, grassroots event into a national—”make that international,” he said—spectacle.

Powered by twin Mercury OptiMax 300XS engines, which Wallace switched over from its original Mercury 2.5 EFI outboards in 2003, the 28-footer is in position to win its class this year. Wallace said the first run he did at the Shootout in 1994 was 91 mph.

“It can get a little nerve-wracking out on the course, but I just try to concentrate on the finish buoys and not mess with the steering wheel too much,” said Wallace, who thanked his business partner Matt Paterson, Joel Lovrige (the original owner of the Skater) and the rest of the crew at Advanced Marine in Rocky Mount, Mo., for all of their support over the years. “I watched this event for a few years before I had the boat and knew I had to do it. Once I opened my marina, I was all in.”

Wallace—a Mercury certified technician since the age of 18—has been all in ever since and doesn’t plan on calling it quits anytime soon.
