Sneak Peek: DCB Sea Trials First M37R Catamaran

Yesterday morning, DCB Performance Boats’ John Armas, Tony Chiaramonte, Jeff Johnston and Deron Rettke headed to the waters of Coronado Bay in San Diego with customers Kris and Shelby Hansen. Their mission?

The first sea trial of DCB’s new M37R catamaran, a full-tunnel beauty almost a year in the making.

Now that its test session is complete, the first DCB M37R is ready for its Super Cat Fest unveiling at the Lake of the Ozarks next week.

Johnston, the president of the El Cajon, Calif., custom high-performance catamaran company, tends to play it cool with new-model sea trials. This time around he couldn’t hold back.

“It was absolutely amazing,” he said of the 37-footer, which is powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines. “We are extremely stoked on the M37R’s performance and handling. And right off the trailer without any propeller testing or height adjustments it ran 124 mph.

“The boat didn’t just meet our expectations,” he added. “It exceeded them. We’re elated.”

“I have been a DCB fan forever,” said Kris Hansen, whose last DCB was a 2011 F-29 cat called Bank Owned just as his new 37-footer is named. “I never doubted DCB once, but having the first boat I’m not sure anyone was sure how it was going to perform. It was amazing.”

The Hansens, who live in Southern California, will take delivery after next week’s Super Cat Fest at the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri, where the M37R will make its official public debut. (They’ll have their new baby back in time for Labor Day weekend.)

Said Johnston, “The boat should arrive there Wednesday night and be at the (Super Cat Fest host venue) Camden on the Lake Resort docks Thursday morning.”
