Speed On The Water Digital Magazine 2015: Quotes of the Year

Between finishing up the November/December issue of our free bi-monthly digital magazine and getting our first Special Collector’s Edition print issue ready for the presses and its Jan. 12 shipping date, we don’t have a whole lot of time to waste. Still, we’re as nostalgic as the next guys—and that only gets worse during the holidays—so we spent a little time this week looking back at the 31 features we produced in our five digital magazines this year. In the process, we found a slew of memorable quotes. Here are our five favorites from some folks we know you’ll recognize.

“Boating has always been something I’ve enjoyed—I just like being on the water. Some people play golf, I go boating. That’s always been my stress relief. I grew up with boats. My dad had ski boats and SK flat-bottoms so I’ve always liked the speed thing. And we all grew up watching ‘Miami Vice,’ right? Who didn’t want a powerboat after that?”—Bill Pyburn, Jr., from “Heart of Pure Platinum,” January/February issue.

“Very few people have ever asked us for less power. People keep buying larger boats, so they keep asking for bigger engines.”—Erik Christiansen, from “Outboard Big Dogs,” March/April issue.

“I was never the biggest ‘corporate person.’ I talked to Pete (Hledin of Skater Powerboats) and in 1996 he gave me a tour of the factory, and it just sort of clicked, ‘This is what I want to do.’”—John Cosker, from “Making Mystic Magic,” May/June issue.

“The first thing that comes to mind to improve the industry? Kill all the lawyers. I’m kidding, of course, but the regulation in this industry makes it tougher and tougher to do business.”—Skip Braver, from “Industry Perspective,” July/August issue.

“Whenever I see a woman driving a boat, whether it’s with her boyfriend, husband or by herself, I think it’s so awesome. Obviously I grew up around the sport and have been running boats for a while, but you don’t need a lot of experience to give this a shot. It’s about as safe as it gets.”—Summer Richardson, from “Another Super Shootout,” September/October issue.
