Sunsation 29 CCX Approaching 80 MPH With Twin 300s
Introduced at the 2014 Miami International Boat Show in February, the first Sunsation 29 CCX center console was equipped with a pair of Mercury Marine 150-hp Four-Stroke outboard engines and topped out at an impressive-for-the-power 59 mph. The Algonac, Mich., sportboat and center console chose mild power for the introductory 29-footer to showcase the hull’s capabilities and keep down the sticker price. (Read the story.)
The first 29 CCX with 300-hp outbooards has reached 77 mph—so far.
Since then, Sunsation has delivered its first 29 CCX with twin 300-hp Mercury Verado outboards—and will deliver its second model with the same power package this weekend. According to Wayne Schaldenbrand, the first one has already reached 77 mph.
“I think we’ll be able to bump 80 mph with that one,” said Schaldenbrand. “I was hesitant to put 300s on there until I knew everything was just right—center consoles are going fast these days and we have to know a boat can handle the power before we release it to the general public. The 29 CCX is based on the hull of our 28-foot sportboat, so we knew had a great hull. Gary Butler, the owner of the first 29 CCX actually had a 28 he traded in for this one. He says it handles better with the twin outboards than his 28 did with a big block.
“You couldn’t ask for a better salesman than Gary,” Schaldenbrand added, then laughed. “He’s telling everyone about it. We just a got a call from a customer the other day who wants one and said he’d heard about it from him.”
Butler reportedly does most of his boating on the Lake of the Ozarks. In August, his 29-footer will play to an even larger audience on the Missouri waterway.
“We’re going to run that boat in the Shootout,” said Schaldenbrand.
