Sunsation Laying Up First 32 CCX

Lamination of Sunsation Powerboats‘ first 32 CCX model began early this morning at the company’s plant in Algonac, Mich. The 32-footer, which joins the builder’s 29- and 34-foot Center Console Xtreme offerings, is headed for Captain’s Choice Boats, a Sunsation dealer in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and should be finished by spring.

Lamination of Sunsation’s first 32 CCX model began early this morning.

“The gelcoat and skin are in the hull mold,” said Wayne Schaldenbrand, one of the principals of the family-owned company. “They started shooting gelcoat today at 4 in the morning—I got in at about 6 a.m.—and I think they’re still there working now. They’re making all the patterns, using cardboard, for the coring that will go into the boat. We do that a little early so there’s no stalling in the build process.”

Once hull No. 1 is complete for the 32-footer, the crew at Sunsation will use it as a platform to create the boat’s deck. Like its CCX siblings, the new model will feature an extra large cabin.

“The hull is going to be a ‘workhorse part’ and a real part for the first boat,” Schaldenbrand said. “Tomorrow, we will be figuring out exactly where all the stringers and bulkheads are going to be placed.”
