Super Stock Ranks Booming In Advance Of APBA Championship Series

Of the five or six premiere classes in the upcoming six-race American Power Boat Association produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1 groups, the outboard-engine-powered Super Stock catamaran category is shaping up to have the largest field at every race. In addition to a pair of canopied 32-foot Victory Team cats coming from Dubai to United States-based teams—one is going to class veteran Gary Ballough and another is heading to a yet-to-be-announced team—Skater Powerboats reportedly is building a 32-footer for another undisclosed team that also will continue to campaign a Skater catamaran in the Super Cat ranks.

“I think we could see as many as 15 Stock boats at some races this season,” said Ryan Beckley, the owner of the DoubleEdge Motorsports team that currently runs a 30-foot Skater but plans to campaign new 32-foot Skater of his own in the next year or so.

According to Beckley, an Australian team with a 32-foot Doug Wright cat also will join the Super Cat ranks for the APBA Championship Series this season.

Returning teams, of course, will comprise most of the Super Stock fleet this season. They include the CR Racing outfit of Casey Boaz and Rob Unnerstall, last year’s Super Boat International Stock-class world champions, and fellow Midwesterners Andrei and Billy Allen in Team Allen Lawncare—both teams running 32-foot Doug Wright catamarans. Also coming back in a 32-foot Doug Wright is Shadow Pirate owner/throttleman Nick Scafidi. Scafidi may be joined in the cockpit by former Miss GEICO driver Marc Granet, his teammate during the 2018 SBI Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla.

“We’re working on it,” Granet said, then chuckled. “We’re just measuring cockpit for our egos. Further calculations are needed.”

Fans of The Hulk, a 32-foot Doug Wright beauty, will be delighted to see the famed catamaran owned by Rob Nunziato return to the racecourse this season. A veteran competitor in the class, Nunziato will be joined in the cockpit by longtime teammate Dan Lawrence. Another 32-foot Doug Wright and fan favorite, Talbot Excavating reportedly will compete in the Super Stock class this season. Washington-based Brett Caswell, the brother-in-law of the late Kyler Talbot, the team’s previous owner, will run the boat with a yet-to-be-determined teammate.
