Texas Outlaw Challenge Friday Update: Participants OK After Shootout Accident

Although an accident in Friday morning’s top-speed shootout portion of the 12th annual Texas Outlaw Challenge put a damper on the festivities, the event’s safety teams responded quickly to keep everything on schedule while the rest of the participants in the Clear Lake-based event managed to have some fun between the Kemah Boardwalk and the afternoon poker run kick-off stop at the massive waterfront home of well-known performance boat community member Kenny Armstrong.

On Saturday, the poker run teams are taking to the lake and its surrounding communities for the poker run, and speedonthewater.com correspondent Jared Powell is going to be on hand to soak it all in. Later in the evening, an event-first “Outlaws To The Max” dinner celebration, awards ceremony and casino night is happening all under one roof thanks to MarineMax of Houston, which is located in Seabrook.

While details were scarce, speedonthewater.com was pleased to find out through various reports that shootout participants Curtis Morris and Michael Rosenfeld were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries after the Ms. Helen Chris Cat spun out while running down the three-quarter-mile course, ejecting Morris and Rosenfeld.

According to Casey Freeman of longtime sponsor Legend Marine Group in Carrollton, Texas, both Morris and Rosenfeld are doing OK.

“‪They have a few broken ribs and scratches,” Freeman wrote on Facebook. “Thankfully they where mandated to wear safety gear, including helmets. We’re glad they are safe and they are thankful for everyone’s help in response‬.”

In a brief story that includes a video of the crash on Click2Houston, officials said the drivers were both disoriented and suffered a few abrasions. The video shows the boat losing control and pitching the racers out of the boat and were taken to a hospital.
