Thunder Run Rolling Out a Few Changes for 2016

If you haven’t signed up for the eighth annual Lake Cumberland Thunder Run in Kentucky, now is the time to do so. Scheduled for June 17-18 and hosted out of Grider Hill Resort and Marina, the event is expected to be as good or better than past years.

“We’ve changed the run a little as we try to do every year to give the participants something new,” said Justin Lucas, who has been involved with the organization of the Thunder Run since its inception in 2009. “For Friday we have incorporated a fun run for lunch to Fishtales restaurant at Wolf Creek Marina where participants can collect a bonus poker chip for an extra card during turn-in on Saturday evening. We are bringing in a new band this year—Backlit will be playing both nights and I think it is going to be a big hit.

“We have a nice long run to Lees Ford Marina this year for our lunch stop on Saturday and we’re also bringing back the aerial photography,” he added. “Lake Life Fotos’ Jacob Davis will handling the photography and he will be printing photos on site for participants and projecting the images at the Friday night and Saturday night parties. We’re expecting a great turnout of diverse boats as usual. In the past we’ve had everything from 46-foot Skaters to 16-foot Donzi and everything in between.”

Lucas said the event, which features raft-ups on both Friday and Saturday at 76 Falls, has some great prizes lined up, including a free houseboat rental from Grider Hill, a surge brake conversion kit provided by Hydrastar USA, $1,500 worth of JL Audio gift certificates from Elite Auto Image, $500 worth of gas cards from Southern Petroleum and Marathon, soft-sided coolers from AO Coolers, a Florida Powerboat Club prize package, cash prizes for the top three poker hands and more.

The drivers’ meeting on Saturday is set for 11 a.m., with staggered departures based on top speed beginning at 11:30 a.m. The event has five card stops, including the lunch stop at Lees Ford Marina and the last one at the card turn-in upon returning to Grider Hill. The Saturday dinner, which is being provided by Texas Roadhouse, starts at 5 p.m. and the awards ceremony is expected to begin at 8:30 p.m. before Backlit takes the stage to take the party to the next level.
