Venture Cup Seeking Entries

With a confirmed field of 22 offshore V-bottom raceboats, the multi-leg Venture Cup offshore endurance race, which will run June 7-14 with a starting point in London, England, and an endpoint of Monte Carlo, Monaco, is still looking for more competitors. According to Richard Carlton, the director of the 2,400-mile event who also will be a competitor once it kicks off, the organizers have been working with Peters & May to make round-trip trans-Atlantic raceboat shipping relative affordable for teams in the United States.

Constructed in 1981, the restored Popeye’s Bubbledeck V-bottom will compete in the 2014 Venture Cup in June.

“We can put a package together to ship any raceboat back and forth across the Atlantic to the U.K. on a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship, for approximately $10,000,” said Carlton. “It is going to be one heck of an event. So far we have 22 entries confirmed but we need a few more, especially from the good old U.S.A. and Canada. Currently, we have Team Warpath entered, but how about a few more?”

Dubbed the “world’s longest, toughest and most prestigious powerboat race” by its organizers, the event featured a shorter 750-mile “prologue” last year that attracted 12 teams. The U.S.-based Warpath team of throttleman Daryl Grady and driver Ole Finholdt, which runs a 42-foot Chief V-bottom powered by twin 725-hp Ilmor Marine engines and Arneson surface drives, finished sixth.
