Vivanco Wowed By Sight Of First Open-Bow DCB M44 Widebody Out Of The Mold

The owner of the well-known white, green, gray and black DCB Performance Boats M31 Widebody catamaran built in 2019—the second open-bow/mid-cabin from El Cajon, Calif., custom boat builder—Mauricio Vivanco of Southern California got to lay eyes on his new ride yesterday. And what a ride it is.

“I mean wow, I don’t know what else to say, she is a beast,” Vivanco said this morning after reflecting on seeing the new M44 Widebody catamaran for the first time on Friday after the boat’s hull and deck were popped from the mold and placed together. “I was a little overwhelmed to be honest. Are you kidding me? I knew how much bigger the boat is than my 31, but it’s still unbelievable to see it sitting there in front of me. It’s humongous. And it’s absolutely stunning, but I knew it would be because DCB steps up and delivers what they promise, and more.

“We set out to make this boat one of a kind—something different—and I have all the confidence in the world that DCB will do just that,” he added. “It’s something this boating industry has never seen in a boat of this magnitude, an open-bow M44. I can’t wait to get it on the water. Of course we went with the Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines. I told the guys at DCB we needed the big power, right? So that’s what we’re doing. And no, the open bow is not for passengers if we’re going fast.”

The similarly colored cat, which he and his wife, Angie, ordered at the end of 2020, is going to be a real gamechanger for the Vivancos as they intend to take 44-footer to waterways beyond the West Coast ones they got used to enjoying with their M31, which was powered by twin Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines, and their previous boat, a 28-foot cat from Commander Boats.

Assuming it is done, the boat, which is named FRANKOO M44, is going to be on hand for the late-August Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri followed by the Vivancos’ favorite event, the Lake Powell Challenge in Northern Arizona in mid-September. After that, they’re hoping to run the boat in the Florida Powerboat Club’s Key West Poker Run in November.

“I’m excited to go big,” said Vivanco, who ordered a MYCO Trailers tilt trailer that is going to be touched up, or customized if you will, by the team at Adrenaline Trailers in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. “I thought I might be a little intimidated by the size, but I don’t think so now. I’m just excited to get it and see what it can do.

“The size of the open bow is bigger than I expected; it’s like a small bedroom up there,” he added with a laugh. “The cockpit also is substantially wider and deeper than the M31. The cuddy is pretty cool, too. They’re going to put a little refrigerator in there for us and they’re making us a portable bimini top that will be nice for rafting up and hanging out at sandbars. The interior is 100-percent Alcantara and we’re going with 17-inch screens all around. The wraparound windshield is a little different, too, as it’s going all the way to the rear.”
