Back In The Game, Part II: Painter Trio Combines Forces For Outerlimits SL 41

Being built for Massachusetts-based performance-boat enthusiast Fred Bennett, an Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SL 41 currently is going through the post-painting, sanding and buffing process at the Bristol, R.I., company. But the fiery paintjob applied to the 41-footer, which will be powered by Mercury Racing 700SCi engines, is a story in itself.

Even with a little sanding dust on its hull and deck, the latest SL 41 from Outerlimits is artwork.

Several years ago, Outerlimits tasked Stephen Miles of Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., to create a graphics package for a seven-seat sit-down V-bottom that a would-be client was considering. That boat never came to fruition, but Outerlimits kept the rendering and used it on its website.

“Fred saw the rendering, fell in love with it and said, ‘That’s the graphic design I want,’” said Dan Kleitz, the company’s national sales manager. “It’s actually a really cool design that would have looked great on, say, a seven-seat SV 50.

Kleitz paused to laugh. “You know, a sit-down seven-seater with an extended cockpit wouldn’t be a bad idea—we’d love to build one,” he said.

Kutting Edge Interior’s handled the cockpit seating (shown here in a rendering) for the 41-footer.

To help in-house painter Clif Periera execute the design Miles created, Outerlimits brought in Chris Dilling of Florida-based Grafik EFX. After the 41-footer is out of the paint department, it will head for rigging and installation of its interior, which was created by Ryan Schwarzen of Kutting Edge interiors of Missouri.

“It should be done by February and we are hoping to have it at the Miami International Boat Show that month,” Kleitz said. “With the Mercury Racing 700s, the SL 41 is such a great package. We can’t wait for people to see this one.”

The boat’s color-matched engines are ready for installation.
