Formula Boats Adding 38-Foot Center Consoles In Pleasure And Angling Versions

Thanks to the leadership chief executive officer Scott Porter and his management team, Formula Boats of Decatur, Ind., has navigated changes in the marketplace like many former high-performance V-bottom builders in the industry. But where most of those builders entered the outboard engine-powered center console fracas when the V-bottom sportboat market—and much of the sterndrive catamaran segment went south in the mid- to late-2000s—Formula bounced back with its versatile Super Sport Bowriders and Super Sport Crossover lines and more.

Introduced today at the Miami International Boat Show, Formula Boats’ new outboard-powered 387 Center Console will be offered in pleasure (above) and fishing versions.

But come next fall, fans of the brand are going to be able to buy a 38-foot center console from the company. Dubbed the Formula 387, the new model will be offered in pleasure and fishing versions. The company debuted scale models of the new model in its exhibit at the Miami International Boat Show, which opened this morning.

“We are back, baby,” said Scott Smith, Formula’s longtime exuberant marketing manager. “And while we actually built center consoles back in the early ’70s to early ’80s, we are back to stay—starting with the Formula 387 Center Console Fish and the 387 Center Console Sport.”

Like all Formula models currently offered, the 387 Center Console was designed by John Adams. The boat, which boasts a 12-foot beam, will be offered with a range of outboard power including triple Mercury Racing 450Rs and 400Rs, as well as triple Mercury Marine Verado 300s and twin Mercury Verado 600 outboards.

Formula Boats is back in the center console game.

“The boating market has continued to evolve and our shift to Crossover Bowriders, Super Sport Bowriders and other dayboats has been successful beyond our dreams,” Smith said. “We now feel the center console sector has matured to the point where a high-quality, superbly engineered and crafted Formula can thrive and be accepted and coveted by discerning and experienced customers in that market.”
