Gallery Of The Week: Dream Chasing With DCB

Sometimes wordplay makes perfect sense. Take “Chasin Dreams, II” the name of DCB Performance Boats’ latest M31 catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 860 engines. In addition to being a more than appropriate handle for a spectacular custom powerboat, it ties into the name of its Oklahoma-based owner, Chase Chappell, who plans to run the cat this summer on Lake Eufala with his wife, Shyla and—if available of course—their 19- and 17-year-old children.

DCB’s third M31 catamaran equipped with Mercury Racing 860 engines will be on display at the Desert Storm Poker Run street party.

Chappell’s progression to a new M31—the third 31-footer the El Cajon, Calif., company has built with Mercury Racing’s 860-hp naturally aspirated mills—has been steady. He and his family entered the boating world five years ago with a Magic before moving into a DCB F-29 powered by an 800-hp Teague Custom Marine, followed by a 2016 DCB M29 with twin Mercury Racing 565 engines. During last summer’s GLOC Performance Boat Challenge in Oklahoma, he ordered his M31 through DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte.

“I’ve gradually just kept stepping up in boats,” said Chappell. “As I get more comfortable, I step up. I ordered the boat with 860s rather than 1350s because I was a intimidated by a boat that could go 170 mph. Plus, the maintenance of the 1100s and 1350s with the rebuilds after 200 hours—I wasn’t ready to commit to that.”

Chappell ordered his cat with a carbon fiber and Kevlar lay-up as well as an Alcantara-finished interior and a SeaDek “boarding kit” on the walkway between engine hatches and the steps into the cockpit. Other goodies include interior and exterior LED lighting, multiple Simrad and Garmin screens, a six-person intercom system, a Garmin VIRB video camera system and more.

“Chase pretty much threw the book at this boat,” said Jeff Johnston of DCB.

Chappell will take delivery of his boat during the Desert Storm Poker Run event (April 18-22) in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., He plans to run the catamaran for the first time on Wednesday, the day before the Desert Storm Street Party. The boat will displayed in the DCB exhibit.

Then Chappell’s M31 will be transported to Oklahoma, where the dream chasing can resume.
