Image Of The Week: Life In Fast Lane At Orange Beach

Yesterday’s conditions in the Gulf of Mexico off Orange Beach, Ala., were sporty-plus for the 54 registered boats in part-one of the Florida Powerboat Club Orange Beach Powerboat Week Poker Run. Never one to over-estimate rough waters, speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden pegged the seas at “three feet and sloppy, with the occasional five-foot hole.”

That was enough to launch Lane Christianson of Austin, Texas, and his guests in Fast Lane 5, his beautiful 2019 model-year MTI catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines. And as usual, Boden nailed the image of the boat in flight.

“We came in at the Pensacola Pass and went eastbound on smooth Intracoastal Waterway all the way to Juana’s in Navarre Beach,” said Stu Jones, the president of the Florida Powerboat Club. “They had a great lunch for everybody there, and about half the boats made a stop at Pirate’s Cove in Orange Beach on the final leg.

“Other than a few mechanicals that forced a few boats out of the running, we had no incidents and great weather all day,” he added.

Florida Powerboat Club members will take to the water today to collect the balance of their cards—and stop for lunch along the way—in the two-day poker-run.

“They did a card stop yesterday and will get pick up more today,” said Boden. “It’s a nice format—and a great event so far.”
