Image of the Week: That Good Boy Grin

Let’s see, it’s been roughly six weeks since the Good Boy Vodka X Insurance-sponsored turbine-powered canopied Mystic Powerboats catamaran made its debut on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks in late August and ran around the popular Midwest waterway all week, including in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Poker Run on Friday before the well-known top speed event. And it’s highly likely that local videographer Andy Sievers is still smiling about the experience.

Not only was Sievers sitting to the right of the boat’s owner—Alex Pratt, who owns the vodka brand and recently revamped the 2010 50-foot Mystic thanks to the team at Hydroflat in Louisiana—in this side-profile image taken by speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden during the Friday morning photo shoot, Sievers also hung out all week with Pratt and the Good Boy Vodka crew, which included X Insurance’s Rick Lindsey, Pratt’s friends, Nate Michel and Tim Mahler, and, of course, a flock of local models promoting the company that boasts that “every pour helps a pup.”

There’s no doubt Pratt and company had a blast at the Lake of the Ozarks and is going to have just as much during next month’s Key West Poker Run hosted by the Florida Powerboat Club. If anyone is looking for a chance to see the Mystic in person, this will be your chance as Pratt is going to do the poker run on Thursday, have the boat craned out of the water and onto its trailer, and have it on display through the weekend at the Conch Republic.

“The boat is awesome—it’s so cool,” said Pratt, laughing and smiling while describing what it feels like to run the town T-53 turbine-powered canopied cat. “We ran the entire poker run on Friday, after the shoot with Pete, and on our way back to Camden on the Lake Resort we broke a propeller blade and a power steering pump so we were done for the week.

“The acceleration from a turbine is unbelievable,” he continued. “It’s cool to get into the hatches and go through everything before starting up the turbines. It’s a complete experience and it’s so much fun. As soon as anyone sits down and you start the turbines, they can’t stop smiling. They just can’t because it’s such a cool feeling.”

Pratt said that Myrick Coil and the team at Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo., is going to help him dial in the boat before Key West. He said they’re going to try to maximize the speed of the engines’ pressure spools as the N2 (high-pressure spool) wasn’t spinning as fast as the N1 (low-pressure spool) during Shootout week at the lake.

“We’ll get it dialed in and see how fast it can really go,” Pratt said. “The fastest I ran it at the lake was 172 mph. We pretty much around at 150 mph the whole time. The boat barely even starts packing air at 140 mph, it’s incredible. And the best part is that the Mystic handled the sloppy water during the poker run Friday extremely well. The thing is a tank.”

“And it’s like the best billboard ever,” he continued with a laugh. “Wherever you go in this thing, everyone has their camera out. It’s insane. We got a lot of attention in my old MTI, but this boat, with the turbines, is on another level.”
