Image Of Week: Patriotic Colors In The Shadow

It’s no secret that speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden doesn’t enjoy shooting flat-water offshore powerboat races. Just ask him and you’ll get an earful. He’s passionate on the subject, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

But that never stops him from doing the job of providing exceptional images of the action for our consistent and comprehensive coverage of the sport.

A flash of patriotic color caught the eye of speedonthewater.com’s chief photographer last Sunday during the Super Stock-class contest in Clearwater, Fla. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

Case in point: Race No. 7 in the American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series, last weekend’s Race World Offshore-produced Clearwater ‘Nationals’ in Southwest Florida, wasn’t particularly rough. Still, Boden delivered a slew of engaging images that helped tell the story of the event, which attracted 10 Super Stock-class raceboats.

Among them were the Performance Boat Center and LPC teams. Both hail from the Lake of the Ozarks area and—if the season ended right now—they would take second and third place in the series behind Jackhammer, another team that calls the Central Missouri lake its home-water.

At one point during the flat-water contest, LPC’s Loren Peters and Anthony Smith found themselves in the shadow of Myrick Coil and Rusty Williams of Performance Boat Center. The two catamarans combined for a moment of patriotic color, and Boden nailed it.

Of course, he would have preferred to catch them together in the air.
