Overland Park Boat Show Kicks Off With Healthy Go-Fast Boat Cross Section

One of the nation’s strongest regional boat shows, the Overland Park Boat Show in Kansas opened today at noon. Though the event, which is housed in the Overland Park Convention Center and serves the greater Kansas City, Mo., area, primarily caters to the general powerboat market, it offers a solid cross-section of performance-oriented models thanks to Lake of the Ozarks-based Big Thunder Marine, Marine Concepts Motorsports, Midwest Boating Center and Performance Boat Center.

Here’s a quick look:

• Big Thunder Marine is exhibiting a pair of new Fountain center consoles—a 43 NX and a 34 SC. For attendees who want to enjoy the dealership’s full current Fountain and Donzi lines, the display includes Big Thunder Marine’s virtual boat show experience.

“We are bringing our virtual booth to the show,” said Jeremy Anderson, the dealership’s general manager. “We have a computer and a television set up so you can view our full virtual show while you’re at the regular show.

“Our virtual show is still going strong,” he added. “We have people checking it out daily and our sales team is using it with buyers at home. They’re both able to navigate through the show together and talk through models, colors and options.”

• Marine Concepts Motorsports is displaying two Renegade Powerboats 33-foot and 38-foot center consoles. Company principal Randy Kent of Marine Concepts boat-cover fame debuted the South Florida-based center console brand at the Lake of the Ozarks last summer.

Marine Concepts Motorsports’ Randy Kent is putting South Florida-built Renegade center consoles in front of a Midwest audience with a little help from a blown-up version of the Speed On The Water 2020 Year In Review page featuring Renegade’s 38-footer.

• Midwest Boating Center, a longtime Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats dealer, is showcasing a pair center consoles at the event—a 390 Sport powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines and a 340 Sport powered by Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines.

Midwest Boating Center is representing Nor-Tech at the show with 34- and 39-foot center consoles.

• Performance Boat Center is featuring a 48-foot MTI catamaran and a Sunsation Boats 32 CCX, as well as a pair of South Bay tri-toons in its display. Brett Manire, the dealership’s co-owner, said he also wanted to exhibit either a Wright Performance 360 or 420 catamaran but simply didn’t have the inventory. “Our demo boat is at our South Florida location in advance of the Florida Powerboat Club’s Miami Boat Show event next month,” Manire said.

The 48 MTI catamaran in the Performance Boat Center display is sure to attract a crowd this weekend.

Asked what sort of go-fast boat sales he expects from the event, Manire expressed optimism.

“You never know—we always sell a toon or two,” he said. “But we’ve sold 32 CCX center consoles there and we even sold a Cigarette Racing Team 42X with Mercury Racing 1100s from the show once. It’s always worth going.”
