Participants Delighted With 15th Annual Lake Cumberland Poker Run

With 100-plus boats registered and a crowd of boats 10 times that size on hand to witness the wonder known as the Lake Cumberland Poker Run, the team at State Dock Marina in Jamestown, Ky., celebrated the event’s 15th anniversary in fine fashion last week.

“Overall everything went really well and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive,” said Shanalda Burden, one of the organizers behind the celebrated two-day poker run who unfortunately had to deal with entertainment changes at the 11th hour when country music superstar Jamey Johnson backed out on Friday and Easton Corbin took his place for the Saturday evening festivities. “The energy was super high for the whole event, and I think Easton’s performance was the perfect way to close out the poker run because he was super engaged with the crowd.

“The weather was amazing this year and the Saturday afternoon raft-up was insane—there were so many people out there,” she added. “Everyone seemed to be very pleased with how things went on and off the water.”

Performance Boat Center’s Myrick Coil, who has been to the event several times in the past, said that everyone on the team from the Osage Beach, Mo., dealership and service center had a blast at the run. He added that it helped that the weather was nice.

“I’ve been down there a couple of times when it rained pretty good on us so it was nice to have great weather this time around,” said Coil who ran an MTI-V 42 luxury performance center console with quad Mercury Racing 450R engines in the poker run. “The concert on Saturday was really cool. I felt like we had a good presence at the event with the 42-foot MTI, two Wright Performance 360 cats and several Sunsation center console models owned by PBC customers. We gave a lot of demo rides in the 360s. The MTI was definitely a show-stopper; everyone freaked out over that boat.”

Everyone with Coil had a great time, according to the world champion offshore racer who runs the company’s Super Stock-class raceboat with teammate Rusty Williams. Coil added that Friday’s pizza party and cove out was a blast, and that he had to wait in line for more than 30 minutes just to “run the gauntlet,” which is what participants call the lengthy idle through Harmon Creek where everyone rafts up on Saturday and throws beads from boat to boat.

Larry and Teesa Lilly of Western Kentucky, said they had a blast at the poker run, which they said is their favorite event of the year. The Lillys, who own Lilly’s Body Shop in Murray, Ky., enjoyed the run in their Sunsation 32 CCX powered by twin Mercury Racing 400R engines. Their poodle, Dutch (right), Teesa Lilly said, was definitely a fan favorite riding in the bow of the 32-footer as they idled in and out of Harmon Creek.

“I can’t even tell you how many beads were thrown at Dutch—he probably got more beads than most of the women out there,” she said with a laugh. “For the raft-up we tied up near the mouth of Harmon Creek so we didn’t get stuck in the main part of it. Of course, we had to drive through it once. We absolutely love the poker run. It is so much fun and everyone there is always so friendly. The boating is excellent, too, obviously.”
