Performance Boat Center’s Coil And Williams Headed To APBA Hall of Champions

Located in Orlando, Fla,, the 2022 American Power Boat Association National Meeting began Wednesday and will conclude with tonight’s Hall of Champions induction ceremony and celebration this evening. Domestic powerboat racing’s official national sanctioning body, the organization embraces myriad forms of competition from the J-class hydro contingent to the multiple classes in offshore racing. The 2021 High Points Championship honors were presented in all applicable powerboat-racing disciplines during last night’s awards banquet.

Among the offshore racers in town for the weekend are Myrick Coil and Rusty Williams of the Osage Beach, Mo.-based Super Stock-class Performance Boat Center team. Running a 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran, the team claimed the 2021 American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Super Stock-Class world championship last November in Key West, Fla., and finished second to CMR Roofing and Construction in the 2021 APBA Offshore National Championship Series. Along with representatives from teams in a host of classes across the powerboat-racing spectrum, Coil and Williams accepted the 2021 Super Stock High Points Championship honor on behalf of the entire Performance Boat Center team.

The Performance Boat Center cockpit duo also will be among tonight’s APBA Hall of Champions inductees.

For Coil, who has been involved in offshore racing for 22 years, the entire weekend has been a super-positive, eye-opening experience.

“I have been getting Propeller magazine (APBA’s in-house-produced publication) for 22 years, but I have never been around J-class hydro racers and all these other racers before,” he said, then laughed. “When they called me up to speak, I had to start by saying ‘I don’t know any of you.’ You see this picture on a screen of a little 7-year-old girl competing in her race suit and squatting in her raceboat, and it’s so bad-ass. Then she comes up on stage to get her award wearing a dress. It’s just so cool what they do and how excited they are about it.

“My wife, Missi, and I want to get a J-class hydro for our kids,” he added, then laughed again. “They’d throw rocks at their Jet Ski if they had a raceboat. I’m really glad I was there last night.”

Coil said that he and Williams are equally if not more thrilled with tonight’s honor. Performance Boat Center co-owner Mark Waddington will be on hand to catch the ceremony.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for being really good at what you do, and I’m excited about it,” Coil said. “One day, maybe 20 years from now when they are 30, my kids will say, ‘My dad is in the Hall of Champions.’ That’s pretty cool.”
